Beyond plantation commodities, the craftsmanship of traditional Tenun (woven textiles) Toraja demonstrates strong potential to be recognized as a Geographical Indication (GI) due to its distinctive characteristics and one-of-a-kind traditional production processes that have been passed down through generations.
This potential is reflected from four notable patterns of Tenun Toraja, namely Passekong, Kandaure, Paruki Pakandaure, and Simbuang Patindok.
Tenun Toraja is a traditional textile that forms an integral part of the cultural heritage of the Toraja tribe in South Sulawesi and holds profound philosophical and cultural significance. The textile is produced using traditional techniques known as ikat lurik and ikat samping, which create unique and intricate patterns. In addition, Tenun Toraja features complex and meaningful designs that reflect values related to life, nature, and ancestral connections.
The Passekong, characterized by geometric patterns, symbolizes resilience and order in life. Kandaure features more subtle and narrative motifs, illustrating the relationship between humans, nature, and ancestors. Paruki Pakandaure frequently appears in traditional ceremonies and is rich in symbolism and social meaning. Meanwhile, Simbuang Patindok reflects the identity of the Simbuang region, incorporating techniques and color combinations understood only by local artisans.
Tenun Toraja is often used in various important adat ceremonies, such as Rambu Solo’ (a funeral ceremony) and Rambu Tuka’ (a celebratory and joyful ceremony), as well as for the tribe’s daily wear, status symbol, and part of marriage dowries.
The presence of the “human factor” contributes to the reputation, quality, and distinctive characteristics of these four Tenun Toraja, making them worthy of protection as a geographical indication. With the support of local government, the registration of these geographical indications brings good news for Tenun Toraja artisans. Proper legal protection of the quality of Tenun Toraja adds value to the product and opens up the opportunities for the artisans to increase their competitiveness in both local and international markets.(JPK/RKH-su)
