JAKARTA: The Indonesian government has announced that 2025 will be the year of Copyright and Industrial Design. By establishing this theme, the application process for industrial design will be considerably accelerated, aiming to enhance services for the industrial community. As a result, it is anticipated that more designers and creators will be motivated to register their works and seek protection under the prevailing IP laws.
To achieve this target, the Directorate General of Intellectual Property (“DGIP”) has prepared several programs aimed at enhancing the professionalism of human resource and increasing public awareness, particularly among entrepreneurs. This will be accomplished through socialization seminars, workshops, and visits to intellectual property centres and universities. The Director General of Intellectual Property, Bapak Razilu, stated that the process of accelerating the completion of industrial design applications will be reduced to a maximum of six months starting in 2025, compared to the current timeframe of approximately nine months. According to DGIP’s data, the number of industrial design applications is expected to reach 6,769 by 2024.
Before introducing 2025 as the year of Copyright and Industrial Design, the Indonesian government has also designated 2024 as the year of Geographical Indications. This initiative aspires to improve understanding and increase the number of applications of Geographical Indications, where the declaration for 2024 has already resulted to significant successes.
The main focus of the 2025 year of Copyright and Industrial Design is to strengthen the protection of intellectual property, encourage the growth of the creative economy, and boost the competitiveness of Indonesian products in the global market. It is an important momentum to raise awareness and protection of Indonesia's outstanding products based on intellectual property rights. (SMN/GMW-Su)
