Indonesia’s Rank Improvement in the Global Innovation Index 2022

Published by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), the Global Innovation Index (GII) is an annual ranking of countries’ capacity and success in innovation. As of 2022, the GII assesses the innovation performance in the economies of 132 countries. In that ranking, Indonesia scored 27.9 and given the ranked 75th out of 132 countries surveyed. This is an improvement from its last year where it scored 27.1 with ranked of 87th. Indonesia is improving, there are benefits for the country to analyze how it is compared to other countries in their reference.

According to the last GII, Switzerland is awarded the most innovative country in the world with the highest score of 64.6, followed by the United States with a score of 61.8 and Sweden with a score of 61.6. WIPO have also commented that Switzerland is still the most innovative country for the last 12 years, while the United States rise to second place by 2022 by unseating Sweden, which was the previously ranked second. If compared to other countries in the Southeast Asian region, Indonesia's ranking on the global innovation index is still far below Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, and the Philippines, but still higher than Brunei Darussalam and Myanmar. Singapore is ranked among the 10 most innovative countries in the world which is 7th out of 132 countries with a score of 57.3. Malaysia was 36th at 38.7, Thailand 43rd at 34.9, Vietnam 48th at 34.2, The Philippines 59th at 30.7, Brunei Darussalam 92nd at of 22.2, and Myanmar 116th at 16.4.

GII has tracked global innovation trends, productivity growth rates, and several other challenges related to a country's economic pace since 2007. Its assessment is based on both subjective and objective data derived from several sources, including the International Telecommunication Union, the World Bank, and the World Economic Forum. With grading assessment from multiple well known international agencies and more than a decade of experience, GII assessment is well-reputable. Based on its last assessment and how it compares the different countries, Indonesia must continue its effort to improve its innovation rating, however its improvement from last year could not be denied. With its continuation, Indonesia can achieve the top 10 in the future. (JP/BDP – SU)
