Indonesia Improved its position in the Global Innovation Index 2023

Oct 12, 2023

The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), that is based in Geneva, Switzerland, has issued the 2023 Global Innovation Index (GII). As this is related to the innovation productivity of the respective countries, one of the factors used for measurement is the amount of IP applications that has been entered at the IP registration offices at the respective countries. The number of applications made shall then reflect the innovativeness of the individual countries. Indonesia in all modesty has achieved only the 61st position in the world. Considering the size of the country, its massive population, and to the fact that Indonesia still has an enormous opportunity to grow and achieve a much higher GDP.

Allow us to have a look at the most important aspects of this GII 2023 report. Switzerland ranked first, Sweden surprisingly has become second, whereas the huge economy of the United States has only ranked third. In addition, there’s the United Kingdom (4). The tiny island country of the Republic of Singapore holds the 5th rank in the world, which is indeed an amazing fact to be considered. Korea is listed as the 10th, China 12th, and Japan is 13th.

Indonesia is continually moving and becoming better. It has moved from the 75th position in the GII 2022 to the 61st position this year. Indonesia already has the appropriate laws on intellectual property in place. Albeit Indonesia is strictly upholding the prevailing laws, it still faces the challenge of certain producers that may not necessarily are aware of these laws and to a certain extend caused the attitude of infringement. However, Indonesia will be making its way towards recognition and ultimately will received a respective position in the future.

An important aspect that Indonesia should be considering is the fact that the Philippines is ranked 56th, Vietnam is 46th, Thailand is 43rd, and Malaysia is 36th. Once again, this commentary is related to the innovativeness in intellectual property. Nevertheless, it is good to know the positions of the neighbouring countries, for which Indonesia most probably be much better than what it is at the present moment. (JP-GSA/su)
