Denmark and Indonesia Explore Cooperation on PPH Programme to Speed Up Patent Examination

Jul 23, 2025

JAKARTA: The governments of Indonesia and Denmark are exploring cooperation on the Patent Prosecution Highway (PPH) program to accelerate patent examination between the two countries. The cooperation is currently under discussion between the Directorate General of Intellectual Property (DGIP) and the Danish Patent and Trademark Office (DKPTO). The discussion took place on the sidelines of the 66th General Assembly of the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) in Geneva, Switzerland, recently.

The DKPTO has partnered with patent offices in many countries to expedite the patent application process through the PPH programme, including Australia, Germany, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, the United Kingdom, and the United States. If the PPH program is realised, Denmark will become the third country to cooperate with DGIP in facilitating inventors and/or patent applicants to enjoy a faster patent application process, lower costs, and higher chances of approval at foreign patent offices, following Japan and South Korea.

In addition to discussing the PPH programme, DGIP and DKPTO also agreed to sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the two countries for the development of bilateral cooperation in the field of intellectual property over the next five years.

According to Razilu, Director General of DGIP, as quoted from the official website of DGIP, the signing of this MoU is not just a formality, but a reflection of the collaborative spirit and mutual learning in building an effective and inclusive intellectual property system.

Previously, the cooperation between DGIP and DKPTO has been ongoing since 2020 and continues to grow through various joint initiatives. Through this meeting, both institutions are determined to strengthen synergies to encourage economic growth based on innovation and intellectual property protection.

We welcome this initiative and will continue to monitor this cooperation, in order to convey positive developments to inventors and patent applicants who wish to file their patent applications in Indonesia. (RKH/GMW-su)
