Banang Pulau Rice, Dharmasraya Signature Product Filed For Geographical Indication

Oct 15, 2026

JAKARTA: Rice is not just a staple food for Indonesians, but rather an integral part of its cultural identity and rural economy. From Sumatra to Papua, differences in soil characteristics, land elevation, farming tradition, and water sources result in a variety of rice, each with its unique characteristics.

The reputation of renowned rice is often misused by irresponsible parties. For instance, rice produced outside a certain region is packaged and labeled with the name of a well-known region so that it can be sold at a higher price. Not only does this practice harm consumers who receive products of non-authentic quality, but it also potentially undermines the economic value of local farmers in the region of origin.

To minimize such risks, several representatives of the provincial government and regional community institutions have officially obtained Geographical Indication certificates for various distinctive Indonesian rice varieties, such as Adan Krayan Rice (North Kalimantan), Pandanwangi Cianjur Rice (West Java), Solok Rice (West Sumatra), and Kurik Black Rice (Merauke).

This essential step is now being followed by the Geographical Indication Protection Society of Banang Pulau Dharmasraya, which filed a Geographical Indication application for Banang Pulau Dharmasraya rice with the Directorate General of Intellectual Property (DGIP) on 11 August 2026. This rice commodity is grown and cultivated in Pulau Punjung District, Dharmasraya Regency, West Sumatra.

According to the application document, Banang Pulau Dharmasraya rice is known for its distinctive, sweeter taste, with a delicate and fragrant aroma that sets it apart from other rice varieties. Additionally, the cooked rice has a good shelf life, meaning it does not spoil easily.

Currently, the Geographical Indication application for Banang Pulau Dharmasraya rice is still under publication period. Nevertheless, if the DGIP later grants the application, the Geographical Indication protection is expected to safeguard the original quality, characteristics, and reputation of Banang Pulau Dharmasraya rice and continuously provide benefits to the community of Dharmasraya Regency.
