Dec 20, 2024
Indonesia has officially declared 2024 as the Year of Geographical Indication (GI). This declaration follows a significant increase in GI registrations, which have tripled over recent years. This success is attributed to the efforts of the Directorate General of Intellectual Property (DGIP), Ministry of Law and Human Rights, through their strategic initiatives to raise domestic and international awareness about GI.
The program has been marked by persistent socialization and support efforts in key regions, which selected based on their high potential for GI applications. As a result, a wide variety of products—ranging from agricultural and plantation goods to manufactured items, have sought GI protection. To date, the DGIP has recorded 182 GI registrations, with 167 originating from within Indonesia and 15 from abroad.
Minister of Law, Supratman Andi Agtas has announced that, after the success of 2024, the upcoming year will be designated as the Year of Copyright and Industrial Designs. The primary focus for 2025 will be to strengthen the protection of intellectual property rights related to creativity and innovation in society. Additionally, efforts will be made to foster the growth of the creative economy and enhance the global competitiveness of Indonesian products.
To achieve these goals, several flagship programs have been initiated. These include the creation of creative zones, the establishment of industrial design zones, the organization of Industrial Design Education Weeks, and collaborations with institutions such as universities, industries, research centres, and Islamic boarding schools. These initiatives are designed to develop a deeper understanding of copyright and industrial design and to provide greater support for creators and innovators.
Looking ahead, Indonesia is optimistic for another year of success, this time focused on Copyrights and Industrial Designs. (SHJ/BDP-su)
